AFYA Foundation’s Inaugural Benefit Awards Dinner

David Bowen serves on the board of the AFYA Foundation, a Westchester-based nonprofit dedicated to recovering surplus medical supplies and humanitarian provisions to support ongoing health initiatives in Africa and the Caribbean.  AFYA means “good health” in Swahili.  For smaller organizations like AFYA, a gala event is a platform for raising awareness as much as raising funds.  We were proud to produce this successful new initiative for AFYA in winter 2011.  AFYA’s first-ever benefit gala completely sold-out and became the single largest fundraiser in the history of the organization.

  • Conceived a new gala and auction for AFYA, spearheading fundraising and securing in-kind donations to maximize income and minimize expenses
  • Developed the theme for the awards ceremony and all the creative collaterals, inspired by the wheels of a wheelchair which signify forward motion and the gift of mobility
  • Worked with award-winning Chef Peter Kelly of X2O in Yonkers to create a unique and delicious menu inspired by the African and Caribbean communities AFYA serves
  • Provided a platform for special guest Evenel St. Vil, an AFYA rehab program manager from Haiti, who gave a personal account of surviving the 2010 earthquake and how AFYA  helped him and others recover
  • To the crowd’s delight, Chef Peter Kelly spontaneously took over the role of live auctioneer, where he enthusiastically sold four Food and Wine Pairings at X2O
